When to Actually Worry Featuring the six-week rule, and everything else worth knowing. Liz RitterInstagramAbout NewBeauty Sep 23, 2026 Unsplash / cherstve_pechivo Hives show up fast and often without warning: raised, itchy bumps or patches that can appear anywhere on the body within minutes. Most cases are harmless and clear up on their own, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), but knowing what’s normal—and what isn’t—makes the difference between waiting it out and getting to a doctor. The medical term for hives is urticaria, and it refers to the itchy bumps and patches that suddenly appear on the skin. Some people also develop deeper swelling along with the rash, called angioedema. On lighter skin, hives typically show up pink or red; on darker skin tones, they often blend closer to the natural skin color, which can make them harder to spot, per the AAD.
