Liz RitterInstagramAbout NewBeauty May 20, 2026 Unsplash / Mathieu Stern A new study published in the journal Aging (Aging-US) by researchers at Boston University suggests that a topical drug called ABT-263 could meaningfully improve wound healing in older skin, not by stimulating collagen production directly, but by eliminating the damaged, lingering cells that block the body’s repair process in the first place. As skin ages, damaged cells accumulate instead of dying off naturally. These so-called senescent cells—nicknamed “zombie cells”—no longer function normally, but they remain active enough to cause trouble. They release inflammatory signals and interfere with surrounding tissue, making it harder for healthy cells to do their jobs.
