As reported by Dermatology Times, the update marks a long-awaited push from the FDA’s Office of Nonprescription Drugs to bring innovation back to the sunscreen aisle and modernize the decades-old regulatory framework that governs it. While 16 UV filters currently hold FDA approval, the last addition dates all the way back to 1999, making this potential update a major moment for skin-protection science. Bemotrizinol (also known internationally as BEMT or Tinosorb S) is an oil-soluble, organic, broad-spectrum UV filter that has been used for years in many global markets but has not previously been included in U.S. sunscreen formulations.
